Overview
The Paisano is a fully independent, student-run publication serving UTSA and the surrounding communities. It was established in 1981 and has remained a platform for student advocacy and journalism ever since, especially considering there is currently no journalism program at UTSA. I was involved with The Paisano from March of 2022 until my graduation in December of 2023, starting as staff and ultimately becoming the news editor.
As a staff writer, I wrote mostly for the opinion section and attended weekly production nights to copyedit for AP Style. As the assistant news editor, I conducted interviews and wrote articles for the news section, including maintaining a weekly current events column. As news editor, I facilitated the publishing of 119 news articles by more than 20 staff members, designing two news spreads for thirteen weekly prints, including the front cover. During my time in this role, I composed a comprehensive 11-page news writing guide to assist new writers in refining their interviewing, reporting, and writing skills.
I have attached some highlights of my work below. Click on any article to read it online.
